I agree that the story doesn't has a specific goal yet, but I'm still excited like when I first read it for what is to come. If you loose that excitement then it's time to step back and search for smth else to read.
This is not some bl or gl story which has a fast ending, the story concentrates on character development over a normal amount of time and in general the growth of this boys abilities over a long period.
