@Melanie If you don’t pay attention, you might just miss it. Remember, Zhenya’s logic is so different from that of normal people. Zhenya loves that Taekjoo is not easily broken no matter how rough he was treating him. He likes the thought that he has power over something like a beast that can't be easily tamed.
If we know something about Taekjoo is that he never gives up and is very strong-willed. So unlike with other women, Zhenya's interest in him doesn’t fade after a short while. At this point, the only thing that kept his interest for so long was Anastasia (the weapon). But it was during the solo contrabass arc, that this idea grew into something genuine.
First, you have to understand that everyone in the world either hates or fears Zhenya. No one really interacts with him like Taekjoo does (since Taekjoo doesn’t know any better), and very few call him Zhenya. Those who “like” him only interact with him because they hope to get their hands on Anastasia.
How Taekjoo interacts with him on the island, in the name of bets, makes Zhenya feel emotions that he had never felt before, like having fun doing something insignificant such as fishing, hunting, skiing, and playing chess. For the first time, he was laughing not taunting-like, but from real happiness. Taekjoo allows him to feel something pleasant for the first time, and once you feel something like that, I don’t think you could ever let go of the person who is the source of your happiness.
As volume 3 continues, it is no longer Zhenya simply interested in breaking Taekjoo, but he really does love him because he makes him feel things he was never capable of feeling before. But his love for Taekjoo is very passionate and intense. In his eyes, there was nothing more important than being with Taekjoo, and that is more obsessive than regular love that we are all familiar with.
