@james lee Pillows in those times used to be made of wood, stone, or porcelain. As to why? They needed to maintain their intricate hairstyles lol, also they thought it improved circulation I think.

I found it hard to believe, so I looked it up. 

Why Hard Pillows?
Unlike modern soft pillows, these hard headrests were used for: 
Cooling: Porcelain was ideal for hot summers.
Hairstyle Protection: They helped maintain elaborate hairstyles.
Practicality: They functioned as both furniture and containers. 

I can't imagine using anything other than soft pillows 🤕
