I think I get where the strangling thing came from. ML thinks that if you're pent up from stress, you should release it, and he thinks it's by hitting or beating another person. I'm guessing it's bcuz of the bullying. Maybe his family bullied him bcuz he was an illegitimate child. So, it's not that he can't fight back against bullies, he just doesn't bcuz he's used to it
