You don't need to be told to care for someone you truly loves, you just notices instinctively. And adolph not realizing anything(or clearly denying) of Lewis declining health both physical and mental is a testament of how shallow his love really is.
So I really think this love he proclaimed multiple times throughout the story is more of nostalgia of what it where before rather than whom he spend those times with. He is in love with the moment but not the person whom he shared those moments with. And also the humongous guilt that hes' carrying. So i really can't with this guy he just irks me in this letter of his. Meaningful yet useless, lovely yet purposeless and delusional in many ways.
But the things it irks me more is how realistic this kind of man is. Many people tend to see the things they value when its due is already long gone. Parents realizing the pain they brought to their child after they died of suicide, Lovers after cheating multiple times realizing the ample amount of their heart and mind their partners occupies during their funerals, Children hoping to reconcile with their dead parents after they abandonded them for a dream of modern life, Siblings regretting all the terrible words they cursed at their dying brother/sister,and a man realizing the importance of his old ring after losing it. It is the worst of tragedies life can bring to love in this world, and the irony of it all is these situations I listed can become lifetime reprimand for the person grieving, to learn the importance of life, but this does not apply to Adolph because lessons only exist to apply in the future life, yet adolph lost his with Lewis demise.
Sorry for rambling but i just want to say that this is the most tragic story i've read in all medias, and it is the best one to date.

I disagree. Adolph's way of acting after Lewis passing is characteristic of someone in pain, not of some shallow love, if that was the case he would've just moved on with someone else. But Adolph did took Lewis for granted, thought he would always be there with him. Still, Adolph loved Lewis in his own way, even though he cheated, he always wanted to go back home, meaning Lewis.
So yeah, Adolph is a piece of sh**, but still always loved Lewis in his own crappy way
i suggest you read the novel if u want understand their characters more. Adolph' love was geniue and heavy, that what make it even more sad, because he failed him badly and broke everything he promises. Lewis describe Adolph was like "child on adult body", Adolph was childish and selfish, his only exception was Lewis.
honestly the start of tragedy was probaby when Lewis quite his job because Adolph get jelous when he talking with other. and since then like a kid that lost his parent surveillance, Adolph make "mistake", he cheated when drunk. when Lewis find out he having affair, he just keep silent. otherwhise if only he get angry and confront Adolph, he probably never cheat anymore for real. there more to it but it been while i read the novel so i forgot the specific. basically although Adolph at fault, Lewis actually have the chance to fix their relationship before it get worse, but he never took it.
how much Adolph love Lewis? in fact he love Lewis more than he love himself. when he found out Lewis sickness, he was so regretfull he hope he was the one who sick. for Adolph, Lewis was like air and water, the existance you take for granted but when it dissapear it kill you. Adolph actually have very strong dependency on Lewis, that why he so broken down when Lewis left him and so in denial when he died. he never notice Lewis bad condition because he take his existance for granted and the posibility of Lewis ever leave him was never crosing on his mind.
also the in the novel actually there 2nd part of letters. on the end of his letters he wrote that: he, just like Lewis will wait for 4 years, and if Lewis still not back he will be the one come to Lewis instead. so yeah, its sugest that Adolph commit suicide after waiting 4 years.
Does he realllyy die because someone said that he was about to but was pulled by the mls ghost and he started recovering from then.
