Not to be blunt , but her mother was a prostitute, a prostitute who saw multiple men. Sure she has the colouring but is she really a dukes daughter?
Her mother told her she was, on her death bed, why not before? If she knew he'd take her in, why not give the kid to him to get her out of that he** hole?
If she was dead and he wouldn't, the kid would have been in a worse position, but if she was alive and it failed at least the kid would have had her to fall back on.
