1. As you said, people would approach it with a more critical perspective. This is a real art criticism.
There are good ones but it's less popular.
Also, Webtoon and Digital Vertical comics partly niche art forms.South Korea (manhwa) is where the digital vertical-scroll format originated. It emerged in the early 2000s.Manhua,Western comics, and manga adopted the format more widely after webtoons became a global phenomenon.
2. Yes, I mean all comics—manga, manhua, manhwa, and Western comics. Some artists and authors would definitely be cancelled if their works were judged by the same standards applied to other forms of media.
3. There are creators who handle these sensitive topics well. In those works, the difficult subject matter exists to make the story feel more realistic. The characters' emotions are layered, nuanced, and psychologically complex.Instead of encouraging you to romanticize what happens, these stories make you question it. They invite curiosity, critical thinking, and self-reflection from the very beginning. That's usually one of the first signs of thoughtful writing, even if the work is popular.
*Sexual assault, abusive behavior, poorly handled character development, and then suddenly giving the story a happy ending often serve as a convenient disguise.A happy ending doesn't erase or justify everything that came before it.I've learned that victims actually staying or ending up with their abusers, or even their rapists, is a real phenomenon. Because of this, it can feel realistic in fiction—though not all dark fiction handles it with that level of psychological realism.
However, dark storytelling being thought-provoking does not automatically mean it has artistic merit or a meaningful artistic purpose. That's another important distinction. For example, when I read Passion, I could feel the realism in many parts of the story. But once it ended with a happy ending, it completely trash fo me.If you read the novel, you can undersand some aspects of it.No matter how realistic a story is, if it ultimately uses a happy ending to gloss over serious abuse or trauma, it loses its impact in my eyes.
4. As for healthy relationships, well-written ones also rely on realistic storytelling, nuanced emotional expression and realistic q*r male characters.
You can feel that the author genuinely wants to tell a positive story rather than forcing happiness onto the characters. At the same time, they still encourage readers to think critically in a rational way.
You also can see healthy qualities reflected naturally in the story: respecting personal boundaries, mutual consent, sincere communication, emotional maturity, and healthy ways of approaching situations. In other words, the story explores what it actually means to be a decent and emotionally mature person instead of simply telling the reader who is "good" or "bad."Â
* I don’t believe that any artwork can be perfect. From a rational perspective, perfection doesn’t seem realistic.
