Guys what is the meaning of fief? does it mean hometown?

A fief is an era of land in the feudal system in medieval Europe where serfs would work in exchange for protection and land, while giving a sh** ton of stuff to the lords on top of religious taxes called lithe. Thank you ap world history lol
