unfortunately, this is the reality for royals. you marry who your parents set up for you, or you get your life [or more likely, the lady's life] utterly destroyed. the best he could do for them at this point is to find a good match for ariatne in his court, and marry her to they guy, then keep her as a mistress for himself as well. or just keep her as a mistress, blatantly. his mother will not be pleased, and ariatne would ruin her own reputation because cardinals daughter, but yeah. techincally, they could be together...
