She's certainly got friends in high places! While a royal monastery isn't something I can relate to, can say how those people acted is very realistic.
It's so common for people to cast judgement and hatred purely based on theories and gossip. These kids have already decided that she's only there to mess around without actually trying to talk to her and get a direct answer from her.
