As much as I feel bad for him, everyone upset that this happened to him wasn't paying attention to what kind of story this was in the beginning... they all did the same to Suha and others. Those are the kinds of people they are and who he has always been. Don't quote me directly but I'm pretty sure the author mentioned in the end credits that Dohyek wasn't going to get a happy ending.
