@Rebel against the harem it does seem very much like he's packaging her up and tossing her out in a way that leaves his hands looking clean to outsiders.
He can't deny she's his, and not taking her in would make him look like a villain.
I don't think it's so much selling her, as getting rid of the problem quickly so it can be far away and forgotten about.
He's the only one in the wrong here.
I pity her, she isn't to blame, in this, but I can't fault the marchioness for being angry, or her actions because it looks like she is providing for Maria, but is refusing to play mother accept her Maria as her own daughter. If she prepared the debutante arrangements it'll look like she's tolerating what he husband has done. In her shoes I'd be wondering what else is going to crawl out the woodwork.
I took it that those comments  and actions were aimed directly and pointedly at her husband, not Maria.

I only have a son. That is your daughter, not mine. You deal with it. I refuse to.

She's drawing a very clear line that she is not going to tamely accept nor forgive his indiscretions.
She isn't going to smooth the situation over for him and fix it and he's taking it out on Maria.
