But to answer your question. In general, Kouichi has to find a way to hatch the egg. If he just stays in the palace all day, he'll only feel like he's wasting time and get frustrated with himself.
For this situation though. He and the team were lured out by the promise of meeting a midwife from the winged tribe, who could help. They made it clear that she distrusted royalty, so she wouldn't meet up at the palace.
Those were all lies to set up the ambush you're seeing here.
