Maybe lili committed suicide in the past since she couldn't take it anymore, so the mother remembered that...maybe, and about the why she is adobting her own daughter it's because she can't get married to the emperor while having a child, the people will discriminate her and so on so they'll go on with "adobting a child".

@Yunao looks more like an execution and if i'm right lily's mother looked like she was being burned to death as well which was a quite common way to kill women back then so i'm guessing she either treated lily badly and then they both got killed and like any story like these she went back in the past and try to undo her wrongs only difference is that this time it's not being told from the pov of the person who went back in time but rather some one around them which is kl
