I think I get even further away from empathizing with her is because of the way she treats her brother when her fathers actions aren't his fault. 

I can understand the father part to a degree because of my dad but I won't go into detail because it's just going to sound like I'm trauma dumping on the internet which is weird and unnecessary on my part. But I will say that my father didn't really physically hurt me but he did verbally and emotionally abuse me, so to say I can't walk in her shoes isn't necessarily correct or incorrect I think I just process this differently compared to how the writer, you and others do.

@Reader not everyone experience things the same way, but from the authors intent, it seems that empathy towards the mc is deliberate.

Her brother didn't deserve his fate, but he definitely deserves her resentment and anger, even hate, he's that annoying. You might think that's unfair given his intentions were pure and well meaning, but if the outcome isn't taken that way by her then he's obliviously ignorant to the harm he caused.
