I think the author forgot that Shirone was supposed to be a very good swordsman and that he's able to fight not just with Magic.

@Noddy it was ages ago that I almost forgot (when he was still working at the library, I think)
@Natalierf he is not lol, he was on par with his friend who want very good to begin with + he has not practiced it in a long time + he has no sword
@AngeL_Of_DeaTH oh I remember when he fought against the blue hair guy from the family who is sponsoring him.The author also forgot about the girl she was only shown once after he got to the academy
