In chinese٫ when they say eat٫ it is “吃”,hungry is ”饿”. They are all one word phrases, so when it is directly translated, it shows only one word. Most translators don't translate purely with their own minds

In this case, the mother asks "does he eat?" which in Chinese is most likely "吃不吃?", so the answer Yuling gives is "吃”

A better way that would've made the translation better if they said "hao" or 好 because it means okay, or yes. Hao le means ready, so that's also an alternative.
