Why did the MC not just lose like he said he wanted to? Is he an idiot? They are trying to write him as if he isn't.

@OrangeDoor while he was thinking of a way to lose in a manner that would be convincing and totally not forced, his opponent ran out of mana.
@OrangeDoor well he needed to lose in a way that didn't get him expelled(if he lost too easily it would look like he cheated) and while he was looking for that opportunity his opponent ran out of mana
