From what I've learned in Gravity falls, that can make you go mad, and he makes sure he doesn't remember everything that happened there cuz he'll go mad if he would. Three, that's what's keeping him so positive and happy sometimes. Helps him ignore how people view him as a monster, hence why he looks so dense to us. Fourth, helps him forget what his master did to him and the betrayal, which is in my opinion the least likely.
