I thought when the background was dark it meant that it was in the past but clearly that's not the case in this chapter? How am I supposed to distinguish between the past and the present

The background is usually black either bc it's a flashback or the surroundings itself is dark ( nighttime or a dark room ), u can distinguish the two by correlating it with the previous panels
