I don't think the ml "deserved" it like alot of people are saying in the comments. He wasn't in love with the "former mc", because that guy was extreme and forced himself on the ml. However, now that "our mc" has taken over, the guy is quite literally a whole new person, and that's who the ml fell for. And in case the former guy (befor the mc took over) was a good guy, there were clearly alot of misunderstandings and miscommunication between them.
