from what I remembered from the novel, the red haired guy has feelings for Christian and I am not sure if Christian ever reciprocated it but I am sure he was pretty much aware of the tension between them. Red head however, chose to get married and have an heir for he believes it is his duty as the next in line on his family. Christian on the other hand, remained unwed and showed no interest in any other relations.
Seeing Christian showing interest in another person and the Emperor's 'property' at that makes him worry. Not just because of jealousy but because if the Christian who had always been loyal to the emperor and had been cold to others showed so much interest then he must be in too deep with his feelings.
