Firstly I'm so happy you understand the story political wise but let's also remember that the whole point of this situation is to mess with the viscountesses psychosis.
Although she's a woman of clear understanding of both royal and imperial etiquette, she's also a woman of weak psychology hold (as specified with the fact that she's preferably the only thing keeping both she and the empress sane) that definitely should've caused alot of psychological pull on her mental state so any small tick could tug at that fine line between her mental health and her greed for power.
We should understand that the writers of these stories understand psychology more than u do (coming from a psychology and neurology major 🙋🏻) and the more i read these stories the more i know these people are pure fictional geniuses for incorporating psychology so well in their stories.
So pls it's not a matter of "oh she's a woman of etiquette so her crash out was poorly written" no it's a matter of the fact that at that point her brain is probably telling her "that all her hard work on building her status is in vain, and the queen could sabotage her whenever she wants"
So that "could've been written better" comment is irrelevant in this case
