Back when noble society was much more prevalent, women who were defiled were deemed undesirable (and this was especially true among the upper echelons of noble society, and its also the source of the gag "I can't get married anymore" you find in rom-com or romance stories). Getting a rival raped would make them undesirable and eliminate them out of the running and unlike murder, ra** wasn't as proactively punished by law as it is today unless the victim had a powerful or influential backer and/or the perpetrator was a low-born like a servant or commoner
