@Kagome although I agree with your point. Those restrictions are there because of the events that happened in the past and to protect the common folk from rogue mages. It also reduces outside influence such as noble statuses and helps maintain order. The professors know what will happen if a mage from the academy uses his/her magic for evil, even if it is a first year student.
@Lucky Vern Helar Yeah. We've seen in other works what happens when mages go bonkers with power and trying to get power. Like in The Great Estate Designer, that ass**** who tried to sacrifice the refugees in that one city by burying skulls all around the hill, all for a ritual to gain power. Or the many, many academy stories where the students are allowed to beat each other with their powers and the professors rarely intervene, causing damage to the school and landing the protagonists' friends and others in the infirmary. It's just story-telling convention none landed in the morgue.
