Well, the story's setting is set up during the 19 80's. It is understandable that he chose death to escape from his he** on earth rather than runaway. His dad had the the power to ruin everyone around him. The trauma and fear his dad has instilled to him made him scared to disobey him. If he were to runaway with Dukgwang, he will definitely be found again and in the end ruin the life his built for the last 8 years.
