Spoiler text.Carcel went to the city where Emiliano is. This is when he started recalling more of his memories. Emiliano recalled his full memories of his past life (Ines 3rd life). The reason why people recall memories is because they have sinned. Emiliano didn't sin but he volunteered himself to remember so she won't repeat her sin and meet him again. Ines recalled her lives because she sinned by her committed suicides. Carcel tried to recall his lives so he broke the statue of the apostle of Anastasio to regain his memories. When he did that he recalled some of his memories of trying to help Emiliano, and his memories of loving Ines secretly before. When he saw Ines in his memories, he realized that's the face of someone who loves someone and knew Ines loved Emiliano. He thought Ines still loves Emiliano so he was somewhat reluctant to let Ines marry Emiliano. He wanted Ines to be happy, but since he wasn't willing to give up on her, he decided to just leave it to his own death as a soldier to "leave" her. Emiliano told him that Ines and him can't be together and also Ines killed her own child. He told Carcel not to make the same mistake as him. In the end Carcel couldn't leave Ines.
