@Koko I didnt get really far in the novel but the basic idea is that he thought he was doing the kid a favor. It was hinted that hes dad used to lock him in a closet or like abuse him. He thought if he released the kid and brought him out early, the kid would end up in more trouble (like him) so he decided to saty with him to keep him company(it's a twisted thinking but its kinda pitiful). He ends up staying in the basement till the father comes back to explain to him that the kid didnt leave and he spent the remaining punishment in his place so he shouldn't be angry at the kid
