He could ask her friends if she was still single, he could easily find out, but it's easier to introduce problems into the story to prevent them from getting together. After all, it's much easier to hold the audience's attention while they're not together yet than to develop a good romantic relationship after they get together, bringing in all the problems that being together could entail, given the dynamics of their relationship.
