definition of happiness can vary. but what they have between them is nothing of such. the author is just proving yet again, how the perpetrator will always be excused and most likely even victimised. this is no happy ending. its rushed, and tbh its pitiful. like a lost mutt who needs its owner and the owner never backs down. what should've of happen is this chapter being the end. as unfinished as it seems, id much prefer them never meeting again & loosing all contact than a 'happy ending' which will most likely make us gloss over all the wrongs.
