Just because Karlyle is the bottom doesn't make him a complete victim either.

Their relationship was a contract, which had started off with Karlyle specifying that useless feelings should not happen. That this relationship is nothing more than just a contract situationship. 

Ash treated him kindly, sure, like he would any other person, because he was following the contract rules that Karlyle set himself.

Karlye wanted the relationship to be discreet, so Ash didn't tell anyone about it. Ash was just following the contract, while Karlyle was tangled up in his own rules and feelings.

Neither is that fault, and neither is an ass****. We're all reading the same story, but only some are reading beyond the surface view.
