When Athi's drowning in the lake Claude didnt really care but he still save her and even ask himself "Why did i save her?". Even from the beginning the story shows us that Claude never like Athi. but at the moment when he first saw Athi bite the statue he start to remember her cause before this he didn't remember his own daughter. The reason he don't remember Athi is because after Diana's died he used a black magic to forget about Athi. He didn't kill Athi cause Diana asked for it. thats why he used the black magic to forget about Athi cause for him the reason Diana died is bcs of she want to give birth to Athi. And he blame Athi for the dead of Diana. He did still hate Athi when they first meet but as time flies he start to love her. If he did hate her he'll just let her die at that moment but by what he did it shows that he start to love his own daughter little by little.
