Ian and TJ are the more layered characters here that's why Jo seems a little boring and naive. But Jo just has really straight convictions and is a little romantic, while Ian and TJ are trapped in a relationship of obession and guilt from TJs side, and felt loyality and numbness from Ians side. Though I do blame Jo for how he was handling Ian in bed: I thought his character was the one with adoration, so he should have taken better care of Ian as the bottom.  I'm curious how this plays out. Although I think Ian is caught between a rock and a hard place...
