@Lauf Not sure if you've ever worn heels, if not... Well, try wearing them for an entire evening without anything protecting your feet and you will learn of their evils. Even without a lot of walking they can do some damage. Particularly when it wasn't uncommon to wear slightly smaller shoes than would be a comfortable fit in the time periods these kinds of stories are based on.
