A reminder that Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, the physician who insisted handwashing before medical procedures, was mocked and rejected by many of his colleagues despite dramatically reducing maternal mortality rates from around 18% to 2% in his clinic. Instead of being celebrated, he was ridiculed, criticized, and eventually died in a mental asylum. His story is a powerful reminder that life-saving ideas are not always accepted immediately. We should never forget Semmelweis, often called the "savior of mothers."
