I don't know if the dad is actually a Jerk yk? he's an obsessive person heartbroken by losing his wife, driven mad by the liars. The mother's death was because she was stupid... i mean instead of hiding in a village and living as a commoner she literally self-kidnapped herself, told the noble to not tell the duke she's there and have her daughter in that house...
