This fighting style was mainly seen for women who used their stable hips and flexibility to compensate for their inability to overpower their more masculine counter parts. You will still see female sword dancing as an artform, rather than a martial art now-a-day. The more practical way of doing this is by wearing gambison and then wearing metal or hide over the shoulders and hips... but then you don't get abs :(
