 Lol, it's rather very popular amongst straight women, the catered demographic is usually Shoujo and Josei.

Also, you'll find more female mangakas/authors writing BL as they are familiar with romance tropes that women enjoy and relate to, especially the bad boy, obvious red flag type. 

If you're into anime, watch Love is hard for an otaku, you'll see how obsessed the female lead and her office friend are with BL, this perception is very common in animes where straight women are into BL, cuz  that's true for most of us in rl
