I agree and disagree with certain people here, he is on the run from a powerful sect, a new assassin and is just barely learning the ropes. He is bound to make some mistakes, plus he isn't well equipped to deal with society after being locked underground since he was 14, he probably, at the moment didn't think of wiping the scythe. But yes, he could've been a bit more logical and at least think of a way to get by easier.
