@Just Call Me Dude He was trying to make her more comfortable by displaying knowledge and openess about the subject, without giving a direct answer to the question. If he just straight up says that he doesn't believe in them, she probably won't share a lot with him.

@Just Call Me Dude Well a therapist is supposed to listen but if Melinda isn't speaking much then are you going to sit in silence? 
Loid is getting the conversation going which will make it easier for Melinda to speak up when she's ready. It's pretty intimidating to speak after a prolonged silence

@Just Call Me Dude Every therapist has a different approach. I'd reckon for a patient that isn't willing to speak, the therapist would have to yap a little bit and somewhat overshare even if it is a broad topic like UFOs, to imply that the office is a comfortable space to divulge in any topic.
