@SIR INTEGRA I've read/tried enough of these stories to link the fl's severe lack of self-esteem with the abusive childhood, but then I've seen a few stories where the fl is still desperate for affection from her husband despite having a healthy childhood and very loving parents.

Same with mls. Usually mls have damaged childhoods, but even those that had good childhoods are still written as cold, emotionally distant, rude, arrogant, forceful jerks. It's made me realize that these authors use the same character formula regardless of character background. It's highly irritating, and these character dynamics are the main reason why I've dropped so many stories.
