I have a gut feeling about this plot. I think the author is trying to build the character of our beloved Esper. Since they have already established a bond and relationship between them, I assume that in the following chapter, the story will focus on how our beloved Esper will remember and recognize his Guide. This might happen through another event involving saving the life of his Guide or by triggering trauma or hallucinations on the battlefield.
