I need to yap about what we read so far. Firstly him viewing his victims as insects ~ by viewing his victims as insects (grasshoppers, caterpillars) he’s stripping them of their humanity, making it easier to justify killing them. Insects are often seen as pests : disposable, insignificant, & unworthy of moral consideration. This reflects his lack of empathy cuz he’s a psychopath. Secondly there’s his narcissistic entitlement of “I Deserve What They Have”. His obsession with taking "shiny" belongings of his victims suggests he believes he is more deserving of beauty, value, or status than his victims ~ which aligns with malignant narcissism, where a person feels entitled to take what they want, regardless of others' rights or lives. Lastly the fact that the FL is somehow an exception which he terms as “she shines”. This could mean he sees her as a kindred spirit, someone he views as equally above the rest potentially due to her resilience in the teacher & parents debacle, or some trait he admires.(I’m having trouble pinpointing what it is lol). His inability to categorize her as an insect suggests she disrupts his usual dehumanization process, possibly evoking a twisted form of love or obsession rather than the usual predatory disdain. Now the giant grasshopper imo in the female protagonist’s dream could symbolize her subconscious fear of being objectified or hunted by him, reinforcing the predatory dynamic. This dream may also foreshadow a looming confrontation where she must either escape his predatory gaze or become his ultimate prize among all the shiny trinkets he’s collected so far.
