I'm so happy the people in these comments are actually acknowledging the weirdness of the author rather than ignoring it, making excuses for them or even encouraging it. The scene with the kid was not neccisarry, skipping to them at the doctor would have had the exact same effect.
People should remember that these authors have to think about this, discuss it with other people (if they're working with other people), right it down, draw it, proofread it. These are not mistakes, it's all intentional. The author wanted to draw that. Anyone who thought it was weird wouldn't have because no one is forcing them.
