There's just so reason why his like this... you guys may disagree but remember he is a slave that was abused his whole life penny was the only one to give him light it's quite normal for him to act in such a way . But penny only see him as a way to escape the duchy penny is using him and nothing more while he loves her and would do anything to stay by her side.
