wait i have a theory: i believe the dog silas use to have died to save silas life probably when cain was trying to kill him. When silas told arthur one chapter bout how dogs are loyal n stuff, he also mention dogs are so loyal they will even die for you. so thats y cain has not daddy or mommy issues, but doggy issues 
i mean the dogs name is arthur as well so i think he will end up loving mc arthur not as a substitute like our mc thinks. silas just needs sometime to realise he deserves to be loved, and is not unworthy. also arthur is so emotionally mature, he wishes the best for silas even if he isn't the one for him.
