@Stijn Koopman To get ethereal stage, one has to condense soul. Eventhough MC has dragon soul. He received a secret art from that sword guy in tournament right. So i believe until he condense 2nd soul, he wont go for ethereal stage.
But what soul mc will condense ? It cant be another beast soul. But i cant be sword too, if he do sword then it is same as that sword guy

Doesn't he go to etheral stage this arc when his hair turns black . Then he uses that art given by his master that turns his cultivation back .
