@Jake my reply to this is simple: there are animals that actually die without social interaction, no I'm not joking.
For more details, rabbits are, of course, the most well known case of this, but chimps have been known to do it as well. You can provide them with everything they need to survive and they will still die due to a lack of interaction.
Human studies into this had to be canceled mid way, as the month long isolation study started to show signs of schitzophrenia and a drastic increase in suicidal tendencies at 2 weeks -_- Individuals such as ourselves use the computer to stave off isolation, take a walk even if we don't talk to people, etc. In the study, they were trapped in a concrete cell with nothing but a toilet and a bed. They were fed bland tasting food and water 3 times a day through a small slot in the door and there was NO light. The result of the study was a ban on prison isolation punishments longer than 2 weeks and they always had to have a light and a window.
