From what I understood, When Ijin and his parents got into a plane crash, he lost his memories and was the only one who survived the accident. Then he was "saved" or brought back to the camp where the numbers were trained. He eventually became 001 and their leader. Then for some reason, he was set-up which made it look like he betrayed his fellow numbers and "died". The korean lieutenant/major helped him, and while they were trying to figure out who his family was, he did mercenary work as "Jin". Until he finally got reunited with his sister and grandpa. (Or maybe he was set-up, then had to pretend to be dead, and did mercenary work as "Jin" and that is where he rescued the korean lieutenant/ major, who in turn, helped him get back to korea.
