My theory is that they are cannibals because when Hohyun slipped and almost fell, the thing he slipped on was definitely blood. So maybe they kill the newcomers or the weak to ensure they still have food left. Or, even darker, they might have a room where they imprison people for ra**, because there were only men and no women in their facility. Also I think, before the monsters appeared, those guys might have been bullies.
